Wizard's First Rule

Primarily to help myself and others who are in search of good quality fantasy fiction, I have decided to profile a few books, especially those which arent too famous. First in this, I would like to start with a series that had me totally absorbed in it and is soon becoming my favorite series after JRR Tolkein's works.

The series is the Sword of Truth series and written by Terry Goodkind. The story starts with Richard Cypher, a simple woods guide who is drawn into the world of intrigue and magic by 2 seperate events: the gruesome murder of his father and the arrival of a beautiful stranger, Kahlan Amnell, who is on a quest so secret that she travels through the underworld. The seemingly disparate events are linked by a common thread. A wizard so powerful that he seeks to rule over the entire world: Darken Rahl. To achieve this, he seeks the box of Orden as well as the key. The key is a book named The Book of Counted Shadow. Richard is the only person who has knowledge of the book. Named the Seeker of truth in order to help Kahlan's quest by his friend Zedd, a seemingly harmless cloud reader, who in fact hides more than what he reveals, Richard sets out on a quest to thwart Darken Rahl for the sake of the world and every life in the world.

A beautifully written book, its more of how Richard learns more about himself and his power. Also discovers Kahlan's secret which makes it impossible for her to reciprocate his love. Those scenes are especially well written and very tender. Harrowing is the part when Richard gets captured by the Mord-Sith. A well paced book with an absolutely jaffa of a ending which leaves you gasping for more (which Goodkind incidentally provides in the 2nd book and thereafter).

A must read for anyone who likes fantasy.

Dont miss out further reviews of Terry Goodkind's books
